Bozrah — State police were late Wednesday at the scene of a standoff at 98 Fitchville Road with a man who had barricaded himself inside a house there with a firearm, Trooper Jeffrey Brunoli of Troop K in Colchester said.
The standoff began around 8:50 p.m. At 11:15 p.m., two police cars left the scene, followed by two more 10 minutes later, but it was unclear whether the standoff had ended or was ongoing.
Police and emergency personnel were staged outside the Moose Family Center on Fitchville Road. A state police SWAT team was seen earlier Wednesday night heading toward the house.
Fitchville Road was blocked off near Exit 24 off Route 2. A line of cars was parked on the side of the road.
Kerrie Gaston, 22, of 104 Fitchville Road said she lives three houses down from the house in question with her 2-year-old son and her mother.
She was on her way home with her sister and her sister's boyfriend at around 10:20 p.m. when she encountered the barricade. Her mother was home with Gaston's son with no idea what was going on, Gaston said. Though police said the neighborhood was evacuated at 9 p.m., Gaston said her mother was never told to leave her house.
"I'm kind of freaking out," Gaston said.
