After sophomore Dean Conte prevailed in the diving competition on March 6, his Branford teammates then competed at last week's Class M Boys' Swimming State Championship, finishing in fifth place out of 23 squads.
Conte had tallied 30 points that went toward the Hornets' final total of 380 at the swim meet at Middletown's Wesleyan University on March 13, putting them behind only Wethersfield, East Lyme, New Canaan and champion Brookfield. Later in the week, the Hornets competed at the State Open.
Junior Ali Pourmaleki fared the best among the Branford swimmers, taking fourth place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.65, followed by a fifth-place finish in the 100 backstroke at 55.25.
Other individuals placing in the top 10 for Greg Miles's team were junior Quinn Bohan (7th, 1:02.83) and senior Alex Gogliettino (8th, 1:03.13) in the 100 breaststroke, as well as junior Tyler Shand in the 500 freestyle (10th, 5:01).
Branford also saw all three of its relays notch top-10 showings as the 200 medley of Pourmaleki, Bohan, and seniors Alec Boucher and Alex Gogliettino took sixth at 1:43.77; the 400 freestyle relay of junior Travis Charlow, freshman Thomas Shao, Shan, and Pourmaleki placed seventh (3:25.95); and the 200 freestyle relay of Gogliettino, Shao, Shand, and Carlow swam to 10th at 1:35.78.
Additionally for the Hornets, in the 200 freestyle, Shand finished 11th (1:49.45), Charlow took 12th (1:50.57), Shao came in 23rd (1:57.73), and sophomore Benjamin Greenvall finished 24th (1:57.88); the 200 individual medley featured Gogliettino in 12th (2:07.71), Boucher in 13th (2:08.06), senior Brian Curseaden in 19th (2:12.04), and junior Nathaniel Barton in 24th (2:16.92); Boucher placed 18th in the 100 butterfly (58.12) with Barton in 22nd (59.65), junior Travis Charlow came in 12th place in the 100 freestyle at 50.47, and Greenvall was 14th in the 500 freestyle (5:15.69) with Curseaden in 17th (5:16.22).
Later in the week at the State Open, Conte placed eighth in the diving with a score of 391.55, Pourmaleki took 18th in the 100 backstroke (54.93) and was 19th in the 100 butterfly (54.05), and the 200 medley relay of Pourmaleki, Bohan, Boucher, and Gogliettino came in 23rd (1:44.99).
