Road construction work set for Montauk Avenue, Howard Street in New London
New London - Construction is set to begin in April on two road projects that include reconstruction of a portion of Montauk Avenue and realigning the intersection at Bank, Howard and Blinman streets.
Milton Beebe & Sons is scheduled to start work April 1 to move Howard Street 5 to 10 feet west to align it with Blinman Street on the other side of Bank. A new traffic signal also will be installed at the intersection, which was deemed one of the most dangerous in the city based on accident statistics, according to William J. Camosci, assistant director of engineering services for the city.
The project will also create several curbside parking spaces on Bank Street, Camosci said.
The state is paying 90 percent of the $360,000 cost of the work on the intersection with an accident reduction grant. The city will pick up the tab for the remainder of cost.
The public works department is also seeking additional money from the city to repave the intersection after the reconstruction work is done. The state grant did not cover the roughly $45,000 in paving costs, Camosci said.
Travel lanes will remain open during the work, which is expected to take about 2½ months. But motorists are also encouraged to find alternative routes, Comosci said.
The Montauk Avenue project, which will include the section of road from Lawrence + Memorial Hospital to Pequot Avenue, will start April 15. It includes new stone curbing, sidewalks, driveway apron repairs, minor drainage upgrades, milling and resurfacing of the roadway.
Work is expected to be completed by the middle of August. Motorists are also encouraged to find additional routes during construction.
American Industries has been hired for the $2.3 million Montauk Avenue project. The city is paying 20 percent of the cost, with the state covering the majority of expenses.
In 2011, the city spent about $1.5 million for road repairs on Montauk Avenue and another $100,000 for improvements to the Bank, Howard and Blinman streets intersection.
