Norwich - Six residents, including four children, from an apartment on Fountain Street are temporarily homeless because of a kitchen fire Thursday that severely damaged their home.
Norwich Fire Chief Kenneth Scandariato said firefighters arrived at the three-story building, reported to be at 6C Fountain St., and found an active fire in the second-floor kitchen.
Firefighters conducted a search of the building while extinguishing the fire in short order. Firefighters were able to use a minimal amount of water, he said, sparing the other apartments from sustaining any damage.
No injuries were reported.
Red Cross volunteers remained at the scene at 5 p.m., assessing the emergency needs of the family and ensuring they will have a place to stay for the night, said Sue Rochester-Bolen, the senior director of emergency services for the local Red Cross branch.
Scandariato said other residents are expected to be able to return to their homes following an inspection of the electrical system by the city's building inspector. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
