Old Saybrook — Southbound and northbound sides of Route 9 were temporarily shut down on Thursday because of sagging power lines, possibly due to the high heat, according to the state Department of Transportation.
DOT spokesman Kevin Nursick said the sagging high-tension power lines, which cross the highway, raised enough concern that crews from Northeast Utilities were called in and the highway shut down.
Utility crews worked between Exits 2 and 3 while traffic was detoured off the highway, the DOT said. The highway was reopened at about 4:30 p.m. A spokesman from Northeast Utilities reached Thursday evening said further information about the incident was not immediately available.
