Mashantucket – Unionized table-games dealers at Foxwoods Resort Casino ratified a contract settlement Saturday with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, gaining salary increases retroactive to 2012.
In voting Thursday and Saturday, members of Local 2121 of the United Auto Workers union voted 908 to 102 in favor of the settlement, Billy Shea, president of the local, said late Saturday night.
About 1,700 union members were eligible to vote, Shea said.
Terms of the new contract will replace those that had remained in effect since the union's previous contract with the tribe expired Dec. 31, 2011. The new pact calls for increases of 25 cents an hour in the dealers' base pay rates, retroactive to 2012, and an additional 30 cents an hour retroactive to March 1, 2013.
Shea said the retroactive increases would boost dealers' pay by 55 cents an hour "right away."
The four-year contract also calls for 30-cent raises in March 2014 and March 2015. In a posting last month on the local's website, the union's bargaining committee said it had "held down and delayed increases" in members' health insurance premiums; ensured dealers get to determine any changes in the distribution of their tokes, or tips; and won a guarantee of improved air quality in work areas.
Shea said he was "ecstatic" at the voting turnout and the "receptiveness" of those who participated.
