Groton – Firefighters have extinguished a basement fire at 426 Thames St., at the intersection with Allen Street.

The fire was first reported at about 6:30 p.m.

City of Groton Fire Chief Nick DeLia said firefighters arrived to find smoke coming out of the windows of the 2½-story house and a fire in the basement.

Firefighters forced their way into the basement and extinguished the fire.

No one was home at the time of the fire. The house appears to be under renovation with a building permit posted on the window.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no reported injuries.

City firefighters were joined at the scene by firefighters from Poquonnock Bridge and Electric Boat, among others.
