Ten-year-old Sofia Priebe of Ledyard was told she would be totally blind one day due to a rare genetic disorder called Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis. Although she has some vision now, this is a degenerative condition that causes the cones and rods in her retina to deteriorate until eventually they will stop working altogether.
Working with the Foundation for Retinal Research, Lisa Carberg, Susette Tibus and Peter Glankoff are committed to raising $50,000 towards the total goal of $250,000. This money is needed to fund the development of a vector for the gene, and several families with children like Sofia are working together towards this goal.
On Oct. 12, A Night of Inspiration will be held with a 7 p.m. performance at Mystic Stage in Olde Mistick Village Art Theater, followed by a reception at nearby Semolina Pasta Shop and Extra Virgin Oil Store attendees can meet Sofia, Mystic Ballet dancers and artists, and a special guest from the Foundation for Retinal Research.
A Night of Inspiration will also feature Dr. Eric Pierce from Mass Eye, live music, live and silent auctions, wine and desserts and virgin oil and vinegar fall flavors tasting.
Ticket range from $45 to $65. Cocktail attire is suggested. To purchase tickets call (860) 536-3671 or visit the Mystic Ballet Box Office at www.boxoffice.mysticballet.org.
Event proceeds go to the Foundation for Retinal Research. To learn more about Sophia’s story visit www.SofiaSees.org.
