Feast of the Assumption

St. Michaelís Maria Assunta Society celebrates the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary this weekend. The celebration begins with the rosary and a candlelit procession at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Michael Church in Pawcatuck. Refreshments will be served after. .
On Sunday, Mass by celebrant and homilist Rev. Bishop Paul Loverde of Arlington, Va. will begin at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 95 Main St., in Stonington Village. Following the Mass a traditional procession starting at 12:15 p.m. with the statue of the Blessed Virgin will be carried through the streets of Pawcatuck.
Everyone is invited to march along in this procession.
Every August 15, since 1920, St. Michaelís Maria Assunta Society celebrates the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to commemorate when God took her bodily from earth to heaven. The society originated from the Sicilian Tusani who migrated and settled in Pawcatuck. The first secretary recorded the observance of the feast and the purchase of a statue, carved in Genoa from wood, and shipped from Palermo, Sicily, in the year 1935.
