Editor's Pick Arts Cafe~Mystic

Tuesday   to

program headlined by the young poet Stephen Burt, who has been hailed as “one of the most gifted poets of his generation.” Burt will read from his new book of poems Belmont, in which he does the seemingly impossible – writing edgy, urgent, hip, and magically tender poems about new fatherhood, about his kids, about living with his family in the suburb of Belmont, Massachusetts. He does this with humor, verbal wit, and a kind of grace that is at once humble in its self-effacing regard and commanding in its craft. Burt’s poems have won him a Pushcart Prize and been featured in The New Yorker and London Review of Books, among many other important venues. Burt is already famous, but not for his poetry. Educated at Harvard, Oxford, and Yale, he is frequently referred to as “the finest critic of his generation,” having already published half-a-dozen books of criticism, including his most recent collection of essays, Close Calls with Nonsense, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. He is undoubtedly new poetry’s greatest champion, as underscored by the TED talk he delivered last year, which has since gone viral.
The evening’s music will be served up by the celebrated cabaret singer, Phred Mileski and Her Combo.
The Rhode Island-based poet and novelist, Claire Cooney will ready from her prize-winning debut book of poems, How to Flirt in Faeryland; $10
