Editor's Pick Klezmenschen in Concert

Sunday  3:00 pm to

Donald Oat Theater will echo with the sound of Klezmer as Klezmenschen of Eastern Connecticut play to raise funds for the Norwich Arts Center. Audience members are invited to dance in the aisles--as they did the last time the group played at NAC in 2012, when joyful patrons from infants to elders joined hands in circle dances.
What is Klezmer music? Remember the wedding dances in Fiddler on the Roof? The clarinet solos of Benny Goodman? Itzhak Perlman’s joyous improvisations In The Fiddler’s House? Or today’s young musicians who mix Afro-pop and hip-hop with Eastern European melodies? All these and more are Klezmer. It’s a joyful music that makes you want to take hands in a circle and dance the hora, but it will make you nostalgic for a vanished world in songs that bring you to tears.
The Klezmenschen of Eastern Connecticut, led by Roz Etra on accordion and keyboard, have been playing together for nearly a decade, with a varying line-up of musicians. Klezmenschen’s regulars include Mystic’s Mickey Weiss on clarinet, New London’s Barry Weiner, flute, Waterford’s Lenny Ashkenazi, trumpet, Barry Greenhalgh of Old Mystic, fiddle, Norwich resident Faye Ringel on keyboards and vocals. We join forces with many other instrumentalists to perform “Jewish jazz” arrangements of traditional tunes, songs from the Yiddish Theater, and Israeli dance tunes. For this concert, our special guest artist is Gary Buttery, tuba virtuoso extraordinaire.
Ticket prices are $10, and refreshments will be available.
