Join a NESS USCG licensed captain and learn the basics of safe boating. Designed for young boaters who are interested in gaining knowledge and confidence in coastal navigation. Students will take to the water as they learn basic powerboat maneuvers in one of our 17ft. whalers, including docking and anchoring. Fall is a great time of year for fishing. Learn the basics of fishing, tying knots, baiting hooks and cleaning your gear. Practice fishing safely from our docks and venture into some of the other local secret spots. Discover local fisheries, and learn about the gear they use, the boats they travel on and the length of time they spend navigating the open seas. We will practice catch and release only. Cost: $100

TGIF Surfing with the New England Science & Sailing Foundation – come and shred the gnar and hone your surfing skills all while enjoying the cool, clear, rolling waters of coastal Rhode Island. Practice your skills in how to predict, select, and judge waves. Gain marine science and ocean safety knowledge, confidence and advanced board riding ability. Have fun, surf with friends, and generate a love of the ocean and surfing. Program meets at Rhode Island Beaches. Our instructors are NSSIA certified instructors with waterfront lifeguarding skill, including CPR/First Aid and have a passion for the sport. Includes: board use and wetsuit rental. Cost: $125

Simon’s Kidgits Club is welcoming all little pirates to Crystal Mall as it turns Old Navy Court into a destination for swashbuckling fun on Saturday, September 5. Taking place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Kidgits Pirate Adventure will offer exciting and educational activities for all Kidgits members.

Throughout the afternoon, members will enjoy fun do-it-yourself activities, crafts, games, a movie and more. Children will have the opportunity to create a pirate telescope, ship and plate to go along with the adventure. Participants are also encouraged to dress like their favorite pirate. In addition, the first 50 Kidgits members to attend the event will receive gift bags full of special goodies and savings.

Kidgits Pirate Adventure is free to attend for members of the Simon Kidgits Club, a fun and informative program that focuses on health, wellness, education, safety and entertainment for children ages 3-8. Since 2003, the Simon Kidgits Club has kept children and parents alike amused with various events and activities while providing incentives for club members, such as special offers, rewards and games.

Annual membership is $5 and provides access to monthly events and scheduled activities at Smith Haven Mall. Kidgits Club members receive a variety of goodies, including a Kidgits Club T-shirt, membership card, birthday card and gift and discounts. It’s never too early to get on the water! The Taste of Sailing class is a class designed for kids aged 6 – 9 and does not require sailing experience. Meant to be a fun group experience, it enables kids to get a taste of sailing over the course of 4 classes. Students will become familiar with water safety on the docks and in an Optimist Trainer or Sonar Sailboat, while learning what it feels like to be on the water. Students will be introduced to the different parts of the boat, knots, rigging and steering. One step at a time, this is an important one to take in a nurturing environment with friendly and patient instructors. Cost $135
