Retired Norwich Firefighter Tom DeMauro, 85, recounts surviving the fire and explosion at the Van Tassel warehouse fire 50 years ago. The Norwich Department was dedicating a new memorial to the four NFD firefighters lost at the Van Tassel warehouse fire and the six other firefighters lost in the line of duty during the department's history on the 50th anniversary of the Van Tassel fire at Norwich Fire headquarters Tuesday April 3, 2012. DeMauro was assigned to Engine 1 and was one of the first companies to respond to the Van Tassel warehouse. He was trapped and badly burned by the explosion and fire. He and fellow fire Lt. Tom LaFreniere were the only two firefighters to survive the explosion.
