President Lincoln released the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation following the U.S. Civil War battle of Antietam fought on Sept. 17, 1862 outside of Sharpsburg Maryland. The battle was deemed a Union victory allowing President Lincoln to release the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on Sept. 22, 1862. The battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single-day battle in American History.
