American Football Heads Across the Pond

As the Patriots arrive in London to prepare for Sunday's showdown with Tampa Bay, I still wonder what is the NFL thinking? I know the logical answer: expanding the game overseas, increasing revenue streams, in short, evolving. Sports have gone global (MLB in Japan, NBA in China, Hockey in Canada, oh wait its always been there) and the NFL wants in on the action. And as a full-fledged supporter of the NFL I wish them continued success and think expanding to new markets is a great idea, in the preseason.

I believe taking a regular season home game away from the Tampa Bay fans and giving it to a country that won't fully appreciate it is inherently wrong. Earlier this year a reader from Glasgow, Scotland wrote in and stated that there are millions of NFL fans in the UK and they do have passion for the sport. I agree and hope they continue to watch and support the game. But I would never ask a Premier League football club to stage a regular season contest on American soil. Earlier this week there were rumblings of Fulham hosting a game at Fenway due to a new partnership signed with Fenway Sports Group. I don't want it! How is that fair to Fulham's loyal supporters?

I think a preseason match-up in a foreign country makes sense. European football clubs have been showcasing themselves in exhibitions in America for years. And they typically play their B-side for most of the action. Let New England and Tampa square off in London (or Beijing for that matter) when it won't affect their regular season record or the enjoyment of their fans. Tampa Bay fans had the opportunity to watch their team lose to both Miami, 10-6, and Houston, 27-20, this preseason. I'm betting they would've gladly traded one of those games to England for the opportunity to host New England at Raymond James Stadium this weekend.
