New London - Local 1378, the New London Public Works Union, has endorsed six candidates for City Council.
The union, which is part of the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees, is backing Michael Buscetto III, Margaret Curtin, John Maynard, Mark Mattson, Marie Friess-McSparran and Michael Passero, all Democrats.
"After careful deliberation by our members, we are pleased to endorse an outstanding group of candidates that is committed to protecting public services for New London residents and businesses," said Local 1378 President William Barlow. "We will work hard to mobilize AFSCME union members on Election Day and beyond."
The union sent questions to all 14 candidates for City Council and received 10 back, Barlow said. The endorsements were made based on response to the questionnaires.
The union is also holding a food drive on Election Day. Boxes will be located at the city's three polling places: District 1, New London High School; District 2, Harbor School; District 3, Nathan Hale School.
The Day hosted a reader web chat with New London Mayor Daryl Finizio on Tuesday, May 8, 2012.
