New London — This is the year City Councilor Rob Pero, a 14-year veteran of the council and the highest vote-getter in Tuesday election, may get to be mayor.
"I’m hopeful. There’s been some discussion,’’ said Pero, who at times has been the only Republican on a panel that has been controlled by the Democrats for the past 20 years.
"I’m going to ask for all their support,’’ he said of the newly elected council, which includes fellow Republicans Adam Sprecace and Martin Olsen; Green Party candidate John Russell, who was cross-endorsed by the Republicans; and Democrats Michael Buscetto III, Michael Passero and Wade Hyslop, the current mayor
"We’re going to have a discussion. Adam, Marty and John seem to be supportive. I didn’t ask them, but they’ve put it out there,’’ Pero said.
He added that he saw Hyslop late Tuesday night and the mayor shook his hand and said "Congratulations, your honor."
The mayor of New London, who is chosen by the council, is a one-year ceremonial position.
"Rob has my support,’’ said Sprecace, who nominated Pero two years ago in an unsuccessful bid for the position. "He’s contributed a heck of a lot. He’s been there 14 years and he’s done so much for the city."
With the Valentine's Day holiday approaching, we wanted to see if any of our readers ever received a Valentine's gift that was memorably bad.
