East Lyme – The broken Niantic River railroad bridge, which has been stuck closed since Sunday, may reopen by the end of the weekend, an Amtrak spokesman said.
Bridge repairs may be completed in time for the bridge to reopen Sunday, barring any unforeseen problems, said Cliff Cole, an Amtrak spokesman.
Crews have been working to fix the broken bridge, which became stuck when a drive chain broke allowing the lift span to free fall to a close. The force of the impact caused the lift span to shift and come to rest misaligned from its normal closed position, according to Amtrak.
