Old Saybrook – The Old Saybrook Fire Department collected about 2,200 pounds in nonperishable food donations today as part of Gov. M. Jodi Rell's "Day of Caring and Compassion," a statewide event to replenish the state's food pantries for the holiday season.

Volunteer firefighters collected food with the help of the local Junior Girl Scouts troop. The food will be donated to the Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries, the fire department said.

Old Saybrook and Norwich firehouses were among 15 fire stations throughout the state participating in the collection.
