Ledyard - The control panel on a dishwasher in a house at 452 Col. Ledyard Highway caught fire Saturday afternoon, but the quick actions of a 14-year-old who was home at the time probably prevented the fire from spreading.

"What he did probably prevented the whole house from going up in smoke," said Fire Chief Michael McKernan. He was uncertain whether the teen threw water on the fire or used a fire extinguisher.

Crews from Ledyard and Gales Ferry departments arrived at the scene around 2 p.m. and quickly put out what remained of the fire, McKernan said. He did not release the name of the family that lives in the home.

He said the kitchen floor and some of the cabinets were also damaged in the fire. No one was injured.
