New London — Sprinklers quickly doused a stove fire early this morning at an apartment at the New London Housing Authority complex at 202 Colman St.
Acting Battalion Chief Jeffrey Rheaume said a third-floor apartment sustained water damage and surrounding apartments sustained minimal water damage.
There was a partial evacuation of the 11-story building. Once the fire was contained tenants were allowed back into their apartments.
Fire Marshal Calvin Darrow said the occupant of the apartment left the stove unattended and went to the bathroom. When the tenant came out, the stove was on fire.
The occupant was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
"If you have to leave the kitchen, shut the stove off," said Darrow. "This is the second fire since Saturday because someone left the stove unattended."
