NEW New London - William C. Gavitt, who served on the New London police department for more than 35 years and retired as its last deputy chief, was laid to rest Thursday.
Gavitt, 62, died Sunday. He retired in 2004, sacrificing his job to prevent the imminent layoff of a popular police captain.
He was interred at the Union Cemetery in North Stonington with military honors.
