I am writing to commend The Day on the article concerning Ben Lathrop, the outgoing mayor of Norwich. ("Outgoing mayor's efforts blunted by the recession," Nov. 16.)

I haven't been in touch with Ben Lathrop a lot during the last few years, but we have always remained good friends. Ben, by his actions, has always put people first. A few years ago I was at the Babe Ruth field in Waterford. Ben found and took me back and forth every day to a paint job I had in Old Saybrook where he worked.

That same year at Christmas time, he and his wife, Barbara, had me up to their house for the entire Christmas weekend. It was a time I will always remember.

They honored Ben Lathrop at the Mohegan Sun casino recently and many old friends were there. His mom would be very proud. And, it was for a good cause.
