Purchase, N.Y. - Eric Hudson scored a career-high 19 points with six rebounds for Coast Guard Academy in a 73-60 win over Manhattanville College in the championship game of the Castle Classic tournament in men's basketball action Saturday.
Hudson was also named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Jevon James added 16 points and six rebounds for the Bears (3-1) while Adam Radtke had 11 points and Trip Fernandes, who was named to the All-Tournament team, scored 10.
In other games:
• Shavar Bernier scored 28 points, including five 3-pointers, for Connecticut College in a 68-63 win over John Jay in the consolation game of the Castle Classic. Bernier was also named to the All-Tournament team.
Rob Harrigan added 10 points for the Camels (1-1) and Dean Lampe had nine points and six rebounds.
• Bryon Allen and Dominique Langston each scored 16 points for St. Thomas More in a 78-67 win over Fork Union Military Academy. Trahson Burrell had 15 points for the Chancellors (2-0).
Women's basketball
• Melissa Martinelli had 26 points and seven rebounds for Coast Guard Academy in a 70-60 loss to Johnson and Wales. Karli Collins had nine points and a team-high nine rebounds and Vanessa Sillman added nine points for the Bears (1-1).
• Jennifer Shinall scored 22 points for Connecticut College in a 74-54 season-opening win over Mount Ida at the UMass-Dartmouth Tip-Off Tournament. Kelly Cummings added 16 points, while Rita Holak and Laura Coderre each scored eight points for the Camels.
College swimming
• Coast Guard's men's and women's teams both defeated Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The men's team won 152.5-81.5 to remain unbeaten at 4-0. Bryan Andrews won the 200 freestyle (1 minute, 47.61 seconds) and Tanner Armstrong won the 400 individual medley (4:30.29). Alex Brown won the 500 freestyle.
The women's team won 145-94 to improve to 2-1. Kim Shadwick (1000 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Margaret Owens (200 backstroke, 200 freestyle) each won two events. Heidi Gayman won the 50 freestyle.
• Connecticut College's men's and women's teams both split their tri-meets with Tufts and Middlebury. The men beat Middlebury 156-115 and lost to Tufts 162-132. Harry Squires (100 and 500 freestyle) and Tim Walsh (100 and 200 backstroke) won multiple events. Grant Moryan won the 100 freestyle. Sam Perley won the 200 breaststroke and Pat Troy won the 100 butterfly.
For the women, Conn defeated Tufts 155-138 and lost to Middlebury 176-111. Katie Karlson won the 100 and 200 breaststroke and Sarah Murphy won the 100 freestyle and 200 butterfly.
College wrestling
• Coast Guard's Andy Snyder finished second in the 157-pound class in the Doug Parker Invitational at Springfield College. Parker beat Scott Legacy of Rhode Island College (9-2), Nick Swanson of Kings Point (fall in 1:22), Mike Willey of Plymouth State (3-1) and Dave Bachy of Wesleyan (5-3) before losing to Dan Twito of Kings Point in the final 8-2. Also scoring for the Bears were Andrew Armstrong (141), Fred Green (149) and Matt Leisy (174).
Men's hockey
• Sean Tuohy, Ryan Riffe and Trevor Bradley each scored for Connecticut College in a 5-3 loss to Middlebury College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play. Joe Capuano had two assists for the Camels (0-2) and Greg Parker made 31 saves.
Women's hockey
• Sara Christopher made 27 saves, including her 1,000th career save, for Connecticut College in a 5-0 loss to Williams College in NESCAC play. Conn is 0-2.
H.S. girls' swimming
• Ledyard freshman Jessica Hespeler finished second in the 500-yard freestyle and fifth in the 200 freestyle at the State Open championship at Yale University. Fitch's Alivia Berg was fourth in the 100 freestyle, setting a school record (52.27), and sixth in the 50 freestyle.
The event was won by Greenwich with 624 points. Fitch finished 13th (144), East Lyme was 23rd (68) and Ledyard was 26th (61).
Auto racing
• Waterford's Dillon Moltz won the most popular driver award in the Late Model Division at Stafford Motor Speedway's annual banquet on Friday night. The 18-year-old Moltz finished third in the division this season, winning three features while also winning three straight 100-lap features over the past two seasons.
