The real disappointment in this situation is that whatever contracts were drawn between Pfizer and the state/city apparently did not accommodate for the potential of a Pfizer departure. ("Bringing Pfizer to New London came at a heavy cost to taxpayers," Nov. 21.) There were no penalties, repayments, guarantees that property can't be donated to tax-free organizations, guarantees of property upkeep upon their departure and such.

Beth Sabilia's comments in this well-written article remind us that yes, this area of New London was in disrepair, and yes, this project has improved the area - thus the ultimate reason for using eminent domain as upheld by the Supreme Court.

If it were not for the protracted legal proceedings, this area would most likely have been developed, and our reactions to Pfizer's departure might now be much different.
