Mystic - The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce is honoring this year's Volunteer of the Year, David Silvia, and three other award winners at its annual dinner on Dec. 10.

Silvia, who has worked at Pfizer Inc. for more than 30 years, most recently with the fire department, is passionate about safety. He has worked with the North Stonington Fire Department and Groton Ambulance, where he currently serves as a field training officer, chamber President Tricia Cunningham said.

"He came to our attention because he consistently comes to our events to volunteer and he's one of those who are there to the end," said Cunningham. "So, with his attitude, he has really stood out."

Employer of the Year LuLu Kiley, who runs the Captain Daniel Packer Inne, was nominated for the Edward O. McCabe Award by three different employees, including daughter Allison Kiley Nasin, Judy Hartley and Chaz Paull - all members of her management team, Cunningham said.

"Lulu's trust in her management team is what drives the success of the DPI," said Nasin, when nominating her. "She allows us to be creative and knows we only want the best for the restaurant."

Community service awards will be going to Neil Kluepfel, president of the board of directors of Mystic Area Shelter and Hospitality, and to the Washington Trust.

"These two have really stood out," said Cunningham.

Kluepfel volunteers as coordinator for the Care and Share Program of the Mystic Area Ecumenical Council, which distributes food and gasoline vouchers to those who seek assistance through one of the 18 member-churches.

"He's someone who puts others first and really shows that he cares about the community in which he lives, and lives that life every day," Cunningham said.

The Washington Trust recently helped staff the Taste of Mystic, manning five ticket booths over three days and putting in "hundreds of hours" there and at other chamber and community organization events, Cunningham said.

"They're constantly giving back to the community," she said.

The annual dinner will be held at the Mystic Marriott, with a silent auction and dancing to The Cartells. Contact the chamber for tickets at (860) 572-9578.
