Haddam — Kyle Connor caught a 15-yard pass from Logan Whaley with 11 seconds left Wednesday as Valley Regional-Old Lyme's high school football team capped the season with a 33-27 victory over Haddam-Killingworth.
Whaley, a senior, had 18 rushes for 122 yards and a touchdown and was 19-for-35 passing for 386 yards and four touchdowns, putting his stamp on all of the Valley Regional scoring.
"You couldn't write it," Valley coach Tim King said of the ending. "You could only dream of the quarterback throwing the winning touchdown. ... And all our snappers were cramped up and out of the game. We probably couldn't have kicked a field goal."
King said Whaley threw a slant at the goal line, caught by Connor between a pair of defenders. Valley got the ball back with the score tied 27-27 with a little less than three minutes to play and drove about 70 yards for the game-winner.
Jimmy Fairfield-Sonn, Oliver Gregan and Dom Melillo also caught touchdowns for Valley, which finished the season 6-4.
Said King: "We went out with a bang."
