There will be a special presentation made to UConn coach Jim Calhoun and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski prior to this afternoon's NIT Season Tip-Off Championship here at Madison Square Garden.
It is the first time that two coaches with 800 or more career wins will meet. Both are Hall of Famers.
Pretty impressive.
Calhoun has 809 wins, ranking him sixth among all-time Division I coaching win leaders. Krzyzewski is fourth with 837. The combined total (1,647) is an NCAA record for most wins by opposing coaches.
In other categories, Krzyzewski is first in 30-win seasons (10), NCAA Tournament wins all-time (71) and NCAA wins from 1990-2008 (55). Calhoun is third (7), seventh (43) and third (40) on those lists.
The pair split the previous eight meetings. Five of those games took place in the NCAA Tournament, including two in the Final Four. In the last meeting, UConn rallied to beat Duke, 79-78, in the 2004 NCAA national semifinal.
Later this season, Calhoun will face Syracuse's Jim Boeheim who has 804 wins and sits in seventh place on the list.
Calhoun needs 22 wins to pass former Mount St. Mary's coach Jim Phelan who's fifth at 830.
