Deep sea explorer Bob Ballard, who heads the Institute for Exploration at Mystic Aquarium, will be profiled during a segment of CBS's "60 Minutes." at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Ballard, who has discovered ships such as the Titanic, Bismarck and PT-109 along with strange creatures that live in the ocean depths, will be shown aboard the expedition ship Nautilus as he searched the Aegean and Mediterranean seas for ancient wrecks last summer.
Accompanying Ballard was "60 Minutes" correspondent Lara Logan, who was in the control room when Ballard's remotely operated vehicle Hercules discovered thousands of clay jugs that survived the wreck of a 7th century ship and now are 1,500 feet below the surface. The show also filmed Ballard at the aquarium.
"Discovery is an unbelievable, unbelievable thing," says Ballard during the broadcast. "It never loses its magic. "People say, 'What is your greatest discovery?' and I say 'It's the one I am about to make.'"
