Middletown - East Lyme High School midfielder Gary Power scored the game's only goal and Stonington goalkeeper T.J. White was named the Region I Most Valuable Player after leading the team to a 1-0 victory over Region II in the Connecticut High School Coaches' Association Senior Bowl on Friday at Middletown High School.
Several local boys' soccer seniors participated in the game: Phil Ziegler (East Lyme), Bryan Gaska (Norwich Free Academy), Frank Salazar (NFA), Luke Capezzone (Bacon Academy), Derek Illinger (Griswold), Tyler Pogmore (Lyman Memorial), Kevin Esposito (Ledyard) and Sean Hallahan (Old Lyme).
Old Lyme coach Marc Vendetti coached the Region I team.
Girls' soccer
• Seven local girls' soccer players have been selected to play in the CHSCA Senior Bowl games today at Rocky Hill.
Bailey Frankewicz (Waterford), Cailyn Walsh (Lyman Memorial) and Mary Corrado (Bacon) have been named to the Red Team, which will be coached by Bacon's Christine Taylor-White. Old Lyme's Catherine Logan and Brittany Cowee, along with Montville goalkeeper Kelsey MacCracken, will play for the Blue Team, and St. Bernard's Catherine Brown will play for the White Team.
The Red Team will play the Blue Team at 11 a.m., followed by the White against the Maroon at 1 p.m.
College swimming
• Connecticut College sophomore Tim Walsh was named New England Small College Athletic Conference Men's Performer of the Week. In a tri-meet with Middlebury and Tufts last Saturday, Walsh won the 100 backstroke (52.07) and 200 backstroke (1:57.49) He also swam a leg in the winning 200 medley relay.
