Complete play in WBCA with afternoon game today

Storrs - UConn isn't over losing All-American point guard Renee Montgomery to graduation just yet.

The top-ranked Huskies' women's basketball team is prone to a few turnovers now and again.

"It's a thing to work on," said sophomore guard Caroline Doty, who had five turnovers Saturday night. "We've been watching film. Without Renee, we know we have to work extra hard. Nothing really beats hustle."

And UConn can do that, hustle, very well.

The Huskies (5-0) rolled past Richmond 86-37, the second of three straight games in the WBCA Classic at Gampel Pavilion. UConn will meet Clemson (4-2) at 4:30 p.m. today in the finale.

A big credit for the effortlessness with which UConn beat Richmond, however, went to the players who have replaced Montgomery at point guard so far, Doty and fellow sophomore Tiffany Hayes.

Doty had nine assists in Friday's 91-46 victory over Hofstra and Hayes had seven assists against Richmond. Doty hit five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 17 points on Saturday, while Hayes had 15 points and no turnovers to go with her assist total.

UConn hit 13 3-pointers, 10 in the first half to set a program record.

Doty and Hayes have been filling in since junior Lorin Dixon, originally slated as the Huskies' starter at point guard, has been out with a sore hamstring.

"The last couple games I've made a special point to have Caroline up top with the ball," said UConn coach Geno Auriemma, who won his 700th career game a night earlier. "Tonight, because she was making so many shots, it just seemed to flip-flop."

Tina Charles added 13 points for UConn, Kelly Faris 12 and Maya Moore 11. Redshirt freshman Heather Buck had three blocked shots in 11 minutes.

For Doty, coming off a season-ending knee injury a year ago, the five 3-pointers marked a turning point in her shooting stroke, she said.

"I was kind of rusty in the beginning (of the season)," said Doty, who nevertheless is averaging 12 points per game. "To have it finally show in a game, it's a relief."

For Hayes, she said assistant coach Shea Ralph has been pushing her in practice to use her peerless speed. Ralph told her no one in the country can contain her if she runs past them. Does Hayes believe Ralph?

"If I play to the best of my ability," she said.

"They both understand their strengths and weaknesses," Auriemma said of the two sophomore guards. "They know what they can do and what they can't do and there's a rhythm to the game, you know?"

UConn got into its rhythm much earlier against Richmond than it had the night before, leading 14-0 as Richmond went 0-for-its-first-8 and ballooning the lead to 47-8 after another 22-2 run in the first half that featured six Huskies' 3-pointers.

The Huskies led 51-14 at halftime, at which point Richmond still did not have an assist.

The Spiders did not attempt a free throw in the game.

"I don't know that defensively we could play any better than that," Auriemma said. "I knew yesterday was going to be a struggle because of all the time off and I knew today would be better than yesterday. I didn't know how much better, but it was a lot better than yesterday. That's all you can hope for."

Doty said the Huskies realize they're far from perfect.

"We want to make it perfect," Doty said. "Just so the road can be easier down the way. … Definitely we push each other. If we make a mistake, we know it's going to be on film."

Clemson beat Hofstra in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader 69-68, with 5-foot-7 freshman guard Keyrra Gillespie hitting a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining for the victory. The Tigers are led by 5-10 senior forward Lele Hardy with 16.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.
