Six Williams athletes selected to All-New England teams

New London - Six athletes from Williams School have earned All-New England honors for the fall season.

Matt Collins (boys' soccer), Emily Hamilton and Vanessa Avalone (girls' soccer), Alison LaFrance and Ali Wislocki (field hockey) and Lisle Schaeffer (boys' cross country) were recently recognized by the New England Prep School Athletic Association.

In addition, a number of athletes also earned all-conference honors in the SouthEast New England Prep League: Boys' soccer - Wes Duncan (second team), Tripp Cottrell (honorable mention); girls' soccer - Hamilton and Kacey Cairins (first team), Avalone and Hadley Eichengreen (second team), Marissa Peck (honorable mention); boys' cross country - Schaeffer, Aaron Davis, Lee Cattanach; girls' cross country - Kelly Kong, Ana Shavoir, Kimmie Meneo.

Men's basketball

• Michael Jensen scored a game-high 23 points in Avery Point's 91-67 loss to Gateway of New Haven. Tim Sartor had 18 points for the Pointers (1-8). Chazz McCarter led Gateway (6-2) with 21 points.

Women's basketball

• Coast Guard Academy's Melissa Martinelli was named the first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the 2009-2010 season. The senior averaged 25 points and nine rebounds as Coast Guard split its first two games.

• Full-session tickets for the 2010 Big East tournament March 5-9 at the XL Center in Hartford will go on sale today at 10 a.m. at all Ticketmaster outlets. Ticket packages to all 15 games are $99. To charge tickets by phone, call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000.

In addition, tickets can be purchased online by logging on to the XL Center website at www.xlcenter.com or the Ticketmaster website at www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets can be purchased through all Ticketmaster outlets, including Macy's at the West Farms Mall in West Hartford.

Tickets can also be purchased starting today at the XL Center box office. Weekday box office hours are noon-5 p.m. For weekend events, the box office will open four hours prior to the start of an event. All ticket purchases are subject to additional convenience fees.

College football

• Saturday's UConn-South Florida game at Rentschler Field in East Hartford will be "Military and Veterans Appreciation Night." Discounted tickets for the Big East game, which starts at 8 p.m., are available to all military and veterans for $16. All uniformed military and veterans are invited to the field during halftime to be recognized.

Auto racing

• Waterford Speedbowl has announced an agreement with the American Canadian Tour (ACT) to end its 2010 season with a Fall Doubleheader 300-lap feature. The Late Model stars of the ACT will join the SK-Modified division to headline the Finale weekend Oct. 9-10.

The Modified Nationals SK 150, Waterford's opening event and highest paying SK-Modified event for the past 13 seasons, will move to the Finale weekend. The Finale will feature 150-lap main events for each division. The ACT Championship will be decided at the fall event. For more information, visit www.speedbowl.com.

College honors

• Six Connecticut College athletes earned a spot on the New England Small College Athletic Conference fall all-sportsmanship team. Representing the Camels: junior David Aigler (men's cross country), senior Meg Christman (volleyball), senior Thomas Giblin (men's soccer), senior Colleen MacPhee (women's cross country), senior Kelsey Fredericks (field hockey) and senior Jessica Roeder (women's soccer).
