Will Dyson survive the season?

Watching senior Jerome Dyson survive his scary slip and split in the second half of UConn's rout of Boston University got me thinking.

Who can UConn least afford to lose to an injury?

Dyson tops the list. This team needs his toughness. This team needs his scoring and leadership.

Fortunately for UConn, Dyson suffered only a strained groin. He's expected to be ready for Sunday's game against Harvard. But will he last the entire season?

Sophomore point guard Kemba Walker ranks second. The Huskies don't have a reliable replacement for Walker. Freshman Darius Smith isn't ready. Junior Donnell Beverly is not a pure point guard.

UConn also would greatly miss seniors Stanley Robinson and Gavin Edwards if either player went out with an injury.

A few other thoughts and facts from Wednesday's game:

-- The Huskies received offense from a variety of sources. Their fast break produced 14 points. They turned 18 offensive rebounds into 20 second-chance points. They also hit four 3-pointers after going 0-for-4 in Friday's loss to Duke.

-- Edwards' season field goal percentage actually dropped after making 5-of-8 field goals. He's shooting 73 percent (27-for-37) through six games. He was shooting 76 percent coming into the game.

-- After converting only 15-of-28 free throws vs. Duke, UConn made 30-of-35 from the line Wednesday. Dyson, who went 3-for-9 Friday, hit 7-of-8.

-- It's a good sign that freshman reserve Jamal Coombs-McDaniel finished with 12 points and seven rebounds -- both season highs -- in a productive 20 minutes. The Huskies need someone to be a consistent contributor off the bench.

-- Junior center Charles Okwandu may have set a team record for fouling out in the shortest amount of time. It took him only six minutes to pick up five fouls. He was whistled for four fouls in a 2:09 span in the second half, including three in 26 seconds. He often looks lost on the floor.

Despite his struggles, Okwandu may continue to start because coach Jim Calhoun likes bringing Edwards off the bench.

-- Walker buried two 3-pointers in three attempts, improving his percentage from beyond the arc to 53 percent (8-for-15). He went 13-for-48, or 27 percent, last season.

-- UConn is taking the day off Thursday. Practice resumes Friday
