You know how they say that, in Hollywood, an actress’s career is over once she hits 30?
They — and by "they," we mean male studio execs — are dead wrong.
Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep are proving the point in the only way that studio execs understand: at the box office.
Bullock, 45, just saw her latest film, "The Blind Side," end up in first place at this week’s box office. And, astoundingly, that’s in its third week of release, an almost unheard-of feat.
Even more stunningly, it beat "New Moon." Yeah, deal with that, you youthful vampires. The margin was rather significant, with "Blind Side" bringing in $20.4 million, compared to the "Twilight" take of $15.7 million.
The success of the family-and-football drama "Blind Side" is Bullock’s second hit this year, following up on the rom-com "The Proposal," which made $164 million.
Now, Bullock isn’t solely responsible for the success of "The Blind Side," but she’s the only movie star in it and she’s been the face out there promoting it. So a good deal of credit must go to her.
If Bullock is having a helluva 2009, Streep has been having a series of awesome years. Streep, 60, has been on the hottest streak of her career, kick-starting her profit-producing bonanza with "The Devil Wears Prada" in 2006, followed by "Mamma Mia" in 2008 and "Julie and Julia" this year.
Coming up in a couple of weeks is "It’s Complicated," which is pretty much guaranteed to be another hit. It’s a comedy co-starring Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin and written and directed by Nancy Meyers, who also did older-female-role wonders with Diane Keaton in "Something’s Gotta Give."
What this all means is there is an audience for female-driven films (example: last year’s "Sex and the City" movie). That’s something that studio executives learn ... and then promptly forget.
What do you think of the Sandra and Meryl resurgence?
