Police chased an allegedly stolen car around the region Tuesday afternoon before finally arresting the driver in Ledyard.

The incident began at noon, when state police from Troop K in Colchester began pursuing Peter Maurice, 47, of 12 Robin Road in Colchester, who had allegedly taken a car without the owner's permission.

Police said Maurice committed various motor vehicle violations along Route 11 in Colchester and Salem before Colchester troopers ended their pursuit.

Lt. Mike Darcy, commanding officer at Troop E in Montville, said his officers were notified of the incident along with the vehicle's description - a 2005 Toyota Avalon - direction of travel and the fact that there were three active warrants for Maurice's arrest.

Maurice was spotted at about 12:45 p.m. in Montville, Darcy said, but when an officer attempted to stop the car, a second pursuit began. Maurice led state police several miles at what Darcy described as moderate to sometimes high speeds from Interstate 395 to Route 2A to the Mohegan Sun casino property to Route 12, then through Preston into Ledyard, where Maurice abandoned the vehicle and attempted to get away on foot near Mulberry Drive.

He was taken into custody after a brief struggle, Darcy said. Officers from the state police Traffic Services Unit, Ledyard and Montville police departments and Mohegan Sun casino security assisted in the effort.

Maurice was held on a $100,000 bond and charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, engaging an officer in a pursuit and interfering with a police officer.

He was also charged in connection with the three warrants, which included first-degree failure to appear in court on threatening and breach of peace charges, that were lodged by Plainfield police. Charges of second-degree failure to appear in court to answer to charges of interfering with a police officer, criminal impersonation and disorderly conduct were filed by Troop D in Danielson.

Troop E in Montville held a warrant in connection with an incident last month in which Maurice was charged with engaging an officer in pursuit, reckless driving, using a car without the owner's permission, and other moving violations. Troop K charged Maurice with using a vehicle without the owner's permission, engaging an officer in pursuit.

The warrants and the Troop K charges incurred bonds totalling an additional $135,000.

Maurice is expected to be arraigned this morning in New London Superior Court.
