Today's morning commute turned out to be a busy one for not only drivers, but for state police troopers throughout Connecticut.

Troopers responded to more than 157 crashes during the snowstorm, according to state police. There were 13 injuries that were not life-threatening. Troopers also responded to more than 1,100 calls for service such as spinouts, stuck cars and trucks or other vehicle issues.

Many of the crashes were caused by drivers going too fast for the slippery conditions on the roadways during the height of today's storm.

Troopers working the overnight shift remained on duty early this morning to assist with the numerous calls for assistance and crashes.

State police said drivers should be aware of future storms as the winter progresses and watch for possible freezing conditions and slippery roads.

Drivers should reduce their speed in inclement weather regardless of the type of vehicle, police said. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for 8 p.m. until early Thursday morning.

The weather service said easterly winds are expected to increase to 25 mph to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph to 50 mph.

The strongest winds tonight are expected to occur between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Area schools were closed or delayed opening because of the heavy rain and, in some towns, snow.

Old Colchester Road in Montville in the area of Black Ash Swamp Road was temporarily closed after a car hit a tree. Minor injuries were reported in the accident, police said.

Lisbon recorded 4 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service. Shoreline towns received rain.
