New London fire displaces residents; firefighter injured

New London - A fire in a two-family house at 879 Bank St. displaced the residents of both apartments Friday.

One firefighter incurred a minor leg injury fighting the blaze, and was transported to the hospital. No residents were injured.

The two apartments had severe fire, smoke and water damage, said Sue Rochester-Bolen, senior director of emergency services for the Connecticut chapter of the American Red Cross.

Rochester-Bolen said a woman lived in the upstairs apartment, and her son and teenage grandson lived in the downstairs apartment.

The first call came in at 12:28 p.m., according to Battalion Chief Keith Nichols. Flames were coming from two second-story windows on the left side of the house when firefighters arrived. Waterford and the sub base FAST team responded to the second alarm for mutual aid.

The injured firefighter was taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital by Waterford ambulance, where he was treated and released.

Nichols said the residents evacuated themselves from the house.

He said the cause is under investigation by Fire Marshal Calvin Darrow, but it is believed the fire started in the second-floor apartment. The fire was knocked down by 1:14 p.m., Nichols said. He said the damage to the building is extensive.

The Red Cross was called to the scene at about 1:30 p.m.

"We had three of us there, and we met with (residents) and made sure they have a safe place to go, and food and clothing and winter garments," Rochester-Bolen said.

"They all said they have relatives they can stay with."
