Mohegan - Kara Lawson was formally introduced as the newest member of the Connecticut Sun at its afternoon media luncheon today.
"I'm excited to be here," Lawson said. "When teams came calling and I had opportunity to look at different options, Connecticut jumped right out at me for a number of reasons."
Lawson signed a three-year contract with the Sun.
Lawson, a 5-foot-8 guard from Tennessee, averaged 9.3 points in seven seasons with the now-defunct Sacramento Monarchs. She averaged seven points and a team-high three assists in eight games for the gold medal-winning United States at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. She shot 5-for-5 and had a team-high 15 points in the gold medal game against Australia, and has already been named one of eight core players for the 2012 national team.
Lawson joins Connecticut's revamped backcourt. It acquired former UConn point guard Renee Montgomery and the top pick in April's WNBA Draft from the Minnesota Lynx for point guard Lindsay Whalen and the second overall pick in a January trade.
Connecticut also announced that it resigned Latvian guard Anete Jekabsone-Zogota to a two year contract. She was a Sun rookie last season and averaged 9.4 points.
Connecticut coach Mike Thibault said that the team expected to sign more of its free agents this week, noting that they've reached a verbal agreement with guard Tan White.
The Day hosted a reader web chat with New London Mayor Daryl Finizio on Tuesday, May 8, 2012.
