Stonington — An elderly woman was killed this afternoon when she was struck by a car while crossing East Main Street near the post office.

The 88-year-old victim was in the crosswalk at the time she was hit. Stonington police Lt. Keith Beebe said it appeared the woman was leaving the Mystic Post Office.

The woman was hit by a Ford Excursion driven by a 39-year-old female. The SUV was on Willow Street making a left turn onto East Main Street, Beebe said. The accident happened at about 11:54 a.m.

Mystic Fire Chief Fritz Hilbert said the elderly woman was not breathing and emergency personnel were performing CPR on her as she was taken by ambulance to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.

The woman's coat lay tattered on the ground and her black gloves were strewn across the street.

"It looks pretty serious," said Hilbert.

Customers and employees at the Tim Hortons coffee shop said they did not see or hear what happened.

People coming out of the post office also did not see what occurred.

The road was closed as police investigate the accident. Police did not release the name of the victim or driver, who stopped immediately after the crash.

No charges have been filed right now, but police said they are still investigating.

Hilbert said in addition to the fire department, Mystic River ambulance and L&M paramedics also responded.
