For 68 years the national Civil Air Patrol, an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, has helped to find and rescue crews of downed aircraft, assisted local, state and federal agencies in drug investigations and supported non-combat homeland security missions. The local Thames River Composite Squadron, based at the Groton-New London Airport, is one of 12 CAP units in the state. Its members, including air crews and ground teams, train regularly to perfect the skills required for completing Air Force sanctioned missions.
