For the second year in a row, TheDay.com was named the top Web site in its division by the New England Newspaper and Press Association.
The Day received nine other first-place awards at the group's annual convention in Boston.
Multimedia director Peter Huoppi and defense reporter Jennifer Grogan were first in convergence for "Stories of the Silent Service," an oral history of submarine vets of World War II that appeared in The Day and online.
Huoppi and staff writers Karin Crompton and Rick Koster received a first-place award for a video on the '38 Hurricane.
The staff of The Day took the top honor in the general news category for "Reality Check," a one-day glimpse of the region's economy. The sports staff and designer Harold Hanka placed first for a special section on the UConn women's perfect season.
Also placing first were Hanka, page one design; Kenton Robinson, serious columnist; Judy Benson, environmental reporting; Jenna Cho, education reporting; and Sean D. Elliot, photography series.
Second-place awards went to Tim Martin, personality photograph, and Tim Cook, pictorial photograph; and third-place awards went to Patricia Daddona, human interest feature; Dana Jensen, feature photograph, and Tim Cook, sports photograph.
With the Valentine's Day holiday approaching, we wanted to see if any of our readers ever received a Valentine's gift that was memorably bad.
