We have recently undergone the rather painful process of trimming the education budget in Waterford, resulting in the loss of an elementary school world-language program and some freshman sports teams, among other things.
Other towns have similarly had to sacrifice programs, reduce spending and ask unions to take unpaid furlough days or pay freezes. There is one common cause for this unpleasantness: the rising cost of health insurance. It is busting education budgets everywhere.
Anyone who advocates slowing the process of reforming health care is either delusional or is working for an insurance company. There are no market solutions for this, the insurance market is happy with the status quo; it is making buckets of money.
We are paying for this crisis every day in many ways. It is past time for Congress to work together, regardless of the political costs, to pass meaningful and effective health care reform legislation.
We can no longer afford to drag our feet, and should no longer support any politician who advocates going slowly. We can get this right without taking years to debate it.
