Kids have waited for Santa with greater patience than a lot of area music fans anticipating the release of Whispers, the long-rumored EP by the Roadside Attractions.
Well, it’s here. Hot off the presses from the Cosmodemonic Telegraph label right here in the Whale Town.
If you’re shrewd, you’ll show up at the extended Blue Collar Happy Hour Friday (February 12) at the Bank Street Café in New London for the event. Featuring the sultry voice of Daphne Glover — whose melodies and delivery would be at home in a ’30s Parisian café, a midnight set in a Nashville honky-tonk, or a blues juke in East Baton Rouge — the Attractions are one of the area’s finest and most unique bands.
But it’s not just Daphne. Multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Craig Edwards, who’s fluidly adept in styles from sea chanteys to zydeco; drummer Matt Gouette, a fine pop songwriter in his own right; and bassist Jason Banta — across the board, this is a really intuitive unit.
And a listen to the songs on the EP, an advance of which I was privileged to hear, only verifies this is a fine cache of instantly memorable tunes that qualify as genuine Night Music.
What’s also great is that the release party — where the Attractions will play as well as sign discs — segues directly into a show by Boston roots wizards Sarah Borges & the Broken Sides. They start at 9 p.m.
The Happy Hour release party kicks off at 6 p.m. and is free; the cover for Borges is a very reasonable $5.
