Waterville, Maine - Shavar Bernier had 17 points and four steals to help Connecticut College keep its postseason hopes alive with a 65-60 upset win over Colby College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference men's basketball game Friday night.
Dean Lampe added 15 points and eight rebounds, while Rob Harrigan scored 14 and Demetrius Porter had 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Camels (10-13, 2-6).
Colby is 17-5, 5-3.
In other games:
• Andre Drummond had 17 points as St. Thomas More beat West Point Prep, 55-49. Tre Bowman added 13 points for T-More (22-6).
Women's basketball
• Marybeth Willis scored a game-high 19 points and Karen Manning added 17 to lead UConn-Avery Point to a 75-26 win over Globe Institute (N.Y.). The Pointers are 20-3.
• Jennifer Shinall scored 19 points with six assists and five rebounds for Conn College in a 83-57 loss to No. 20 Colby in the NESCAC. Emilly Cummings added 13 points for Conn (8-15, 0-8).
Men's hockey
• Ross James scored his second goal of the game just over three minutes into overtime as Conn College defeated Southern Maine, 3-2. Julien Boutet also scored for the Camels (6-14-1) and Greg Parker made 26 saves. Southern Maine is 8-11-3.
Women's hockey
• Kelsey Kirker scored the last two goals for Conn College in a 5-4 win over Hamilton College. Samantha Schuffenecker, Ashleigh Kowtoniuk and Celia Medeiros also scored for Conn (7-12-2) and Sara Christopher made 25 saves.
College wrestling
• Coast Guard Academy rallied from a 21-3 deficit by winning the final five matches to defeat Western New England, 23-21. The Bears later lost to Johnson & Wales, 47-3. Andy Snyder won by pin against WNEC and also earned the Bears' only points against Johnson & Wales with a decision. Matt Leisy and Will Stark each won by major decision for the Bears (2-13-1).
H.S. gymnastics
• Christine Caron of Killingly won the all-around (38.15) and Woodstock Academy won the team title at the Eastern Connecticut Conference Championships at Deary's Gymnastics in Killingly. Woodstock had 132.75 points and Stonington was second (131.65). Megan McNeil was fourth in the all-around for Stonington. Also, Hope Rezendes tied for fifth on the floor and Danielle Jacobs was sixth in the bars.
H.S. swimming
• Waterford avenged an earlier loss this season, beating Windham/RHAM, 101-85, in the ECC. John Stockman (50-meter freestyle), Jon Champlain (diving) and Reece Adamson (100 breaststroke) each won individual events for Waterford (5-6, 5-4). Windham won 93-89 in Willimantic on Jan. 15.
• Aaron Dean and Luke Watson each won three events for Fitch in a 96-70 ECC win over Norwich Free Academy. Dean won the 50 and 100 freestyle while Watson won the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke. The 200 medley relay team of Dean, Watson, Henry Kietzman and Tom Rowland were also winners for Fitch (9-1, 8-1). Justin Paz and Tyler Gromko were members of two winning relay teams for NFA (5-6, 4-6).
H.S. indoor track
• New London's Dave Still finished second in the 600 meters (1 minute, 24.94 seconds) and Bacon Academy's Andrew Hill was second in the 1,000 (2:35.96) at the CIAC Class M championships at the New Haven Athletic Center.
On the girls' side, Ledyard's Elyse Phillips was second in the pole vault (9 feet) to lead the Colonels to a ninth-place finish, tops among local teams. Bacon's Kelsey Hall was third in the pole vault (8-0).
College softball
• Coast Guard Academy, which made its first NCAA Division III tournament appearance last season, is ranked 11th nationally - its highest ranking in school history - in the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association preseason poll. Last year, the Bears went 39-7-1 and reached the NCAA Div. III New England title game.
