Harris, Iglesias, O'Neil lead Mariner women to 81-73 victory

Chicopee, Mass. - New London's Alix O'Neil scored six of Mitchell College's 14 points in overtime as the Mariners beat Elms College 81-73 in Saturday's New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball game.

Destiney Harris had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Jennifer Iglesias had 20 points and six assists and O'Neil scored 13 points for Mitchell (10-10, 10-4). Katie Condon led Elms (8-15, 7-7) with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

In other games:

• Melissa Martinelli had 28 points for Coast Guard Academy in an 80-45 loss to Babson in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play. Vanessa Sillman added six points for Coast Guard (5-16, 3-13).

• Former Norwich Free Academy standout Leah Rubega scored eight points and had 10 rebounds, leading Bowdoin to an 81-37 win over Connecticut College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Jennifer Shinall had nine points and five rebounds for Conn (8-16, 0-9). Caitlin Hynes scored 17 points for Bowdoin (19-5, 5-4).

Men's basketball

• Shavar Bernier scored 24 points, including six 3-pointers, for Conn College in a 67-47 loss to Bowdoin in NESCAC play. Demetrius Porter added 12 points and six rebounds for Conn (10-14, 2-7). Bernier set the school record for career 3-pointers with 202. The previous record of 200 was set by New London's Dwayne Stallings in 1999.

• Tre Bowman had 23 points for St. Thomas More in an 82-73 win over Army JV. Bryon Allen had 21 points and eight assists for T-More (23-6).

• Montville's Mike Quinn matched his career-high with 18 points, leading Bentley College to a 72-66 overtime victory over Southern New Hampshire. Quinn is a junior guard for the Falcons (21-3), who are ranked 13th in NCAA Division II.

• Jevon James had 13 points and eight rebounds for Coast Guard in a 64-53 loss to MIT in the NEWMAC. Eric Hudson added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Bears (7-14, 4-7).

• Juan Maldonado scored 18 points, leading Elms past Mitchell 79-59 in a NECC game. Paul Jefferson scored 17 points for Mitchell (3-17, 2-9). Elms is 18-6, 11-2.

Men's indoor track

• Tieran Bonner posted a career best time in the 200-meter dash (22.73) for Coast Guard at the Boston University Valentine Invite. Bonner qualified for the ECAC and All-New England Championships in the 200. Also qualifying for the postseason were: Josh Wofford and Kyle Coleman (400), Andy Price and Trevor Siperek (3,000).

• Conn College took part at BU. Doug Wright and Tim Murtagh qualified for the New England Division III meet in the 300, Andrew Duarte and Tristan Cole qualified in the 800 and Alex DeShields set a school record in the long jump (21 feet, 2 inches).

• UConn's Scott Johnson finished second in the 1,000 Friday night at the Lafayette-Rider Invitational at New York. Johnson, the former Old Lyme High standout, finished in 2:28.05, which qualified him for the IC4A meet.

Women's indoor track

• Conn College participated in the MIT Invitational. Margaret Thayer finished third in the long jump (16-5), setting a school record. The 4x400 relay team of Hayley O'Neil, Haley Goodwill, Michelle Wesley and Merry Byrne won for Conn, as did the 4x800 relay team of Kelsey Taylor, Ally Bonito, Molly Pistrang and Kerry Dermody.

• Coast Guard was at the BU Valentine Invite. Tessa Knott and Sarah Blatt ran personal bests, Knott a 3:15.88 in the 1,000 and Blatt a 2:23.16 in the 800. Claire Delaney and Gina Caylor cleared 8-6 in the pole vault to qualify for the New England Division III meet.

Women's hockey

• Sara Christopher made 25 saves for Conn College in a 1-0 loss to Hamilton College. Conn is 7-13-2.

Men's hockey

• Joe Capuano scored twice for Conn College in a 6-2 win over the University of New England. Ross James, J.J. McGregor, Brett Moore and Trevor Bradley also scored for Conn (7-14-1).

Men's tennis

• Coast Guard defeated Holy Cross 7-2. Greg Mitchell, Nick Martin, Chris Pappe, Blake Maurer and Vince Falco each won singles matchess in straight sets for Coast Guard (3-3).
