CGA's Shadwick swims to another record

Wellesley, Mass. - Coast Guard Academy junior Kimberly Shadwick captured the 200-yard freestyle in record-setting fashion Saturday on Day 2 of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's swimming and diving championships at Wellesley College.

Shadwick, who broke a meet record in the 500 freestyle on Friday, set her second meet record Saturday in the 200 free, touching the wall in 1 minute, 51.66 seconds, bettering her old record of 1:53.07 set in 2009.

Also for CGA, senior Amy Olson placed second in the 100 breastroke (1:08.04) and the 800 freestyle relay team Heidi Gayman, Margaret Owens, Emily Zalewski and Shadwick placed third in 7:47.09.

With one day remaining, Springfield College is the team leader with 568 points while Coast Guard is fourth with 304 points.

Men's basketball

• Eric Hudson scored 18 points with seven rebounds for Coast Guard Academy in a 77-63 loss to Wheaton in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play. Jimmy Knudsen added 16 points for Coast Guard (7-15, 4-8) and Stefan Lewis scored nine. The Bears are seeded No. 6 in the upcoming NEWMAC tournament and will play at No. 3 WPI in the first round on Wednesday.

• Eric Murray had 18 points and 13 rebounds for Mitchell College in an 86-74 loss to Southern Vermont in New England Collegiate Conference play. Mike DePaolo added 13 points for Mitchell (4-19, 3-11) and Alex Vess scored 11.

Women's basketball

• New London's Alix O'Neil scored 22 points with six rebounds for Mitchell in a 64-50 win over Becker College in NECC play. Jennifer Iglesias added 20 points and six rebounds for Mitchell (12-11, 12-4) and Destiney Harris scored seven.

• Ivori Aiken came off the bench to score 11 points, leading Clark to a 58-47 win over Coast Guard in a NEWMAC game. The Bears are seeded No. 8 and will play at top-seeded Babson on Wednesday in the first round of the NEWMAC tournament.

Men's hockey

• Ryan Howarth had two goals and an assist and Brett Moore added a goal and an assist to help Connecticut College defeat St. Michael's, 5-3, in its season finale. Joe Capuano scored with 1:12 remaining in regulation for the eventual game-winner and Greg Parker made 24 saves for the Camels (8-15-1), who finished the year by winning four of their last five games.

Women's hockey

• Rachel Lindmark, Erin Davey and Courtney Smith each scored twice for Conn College in a 7-0 win over Wesleyan in the NESCAC. Kourtney Brim also scored for Conn (8-14-2, 5-9-2) and Amy Leichliter made 16 saves.

Men's track and field

• Coast Guard's Tieran Bonner set a school record placing third in the 55-meter dash (6.52 seconds) at the New England Division III Meet. The previous record of 6.61 was set by Ahmad Jahaya in 1994. Coast Guard finished 13th in the team standings. John Jaskot finsihed fifth in the high jump and Jesse Cremeans finished fourth in the pentathalon.

Women's track and field

• Conn College placed 21st at the New England Division III Championships with four points. The event was won by Williams with 176 points. Tess Peckler finished seventh in the high jump for Conn and the 4x800 relay team of Kelsey Taylor, Ally Bonito, Molly Pistrang and Kerry Dermody finished seventh.

Coast Guard's Sarah Blatt finished 12th in the 800 and joined Alainna Kiskaddon, Tessa Knott and Colin Fall to place 13th in the 4x800 relay.

Men's tennis

• Chris Pappe won 6-1, 5-7, 10-8 at No. 3 singles in Coast Guard's 8-1 loss to Vassar. The Bears are 3-4.

NECC honors

• Following is a list of Mitchell athletes named to NECC Fall All-Academic teams (athletes must post minimum 3.40 grade point average and freshman are not eligible):

Eric Appleby and John Hoffman (men's cross country); Kailee Hyde and Brittany Smyth (women's cross country); Matt Chatell, Tad Maynard, Richards Palaia and John Pescheta (golf); Steven Barnett and Ricardo McLean (men's soccer); Paige Ehnot, Morgan Lindsay, Brittany O'Neil and Shannen Pelletier (women's soccer); Jennifer Bordonaro, Heather-Renae Powers and Kelly Reynolds (volleyball).

In addition, two players with local ties made the women's soccer team - Lebanon's Rachel Schelhorn (Daniel Webster) and Salem's Amanda Siebert (Wheelock).
