Kinder, Jones lead Indians into Class S second round, 56-54

Montville - Alex Kinder and Stephanie Jones scored 17 points apiece as 16th-seeded Montville High School eased past Woodland Regional of Beacon Falls, 56-54, in the opening round of the CIAC Class M girls' basketball tournament Tuesday night.

The Indians (16-8) advanced to Friday's second round at top-seeded Brookfield, which had a first-round bye.

Jones hit four 3-pointers for Montville, which held on after building a 10-point lead after the first quarter. Danielle Autencio and Kim Bigelow each added six points the Indians.

Heather Framski scored 22 points for No. 17 Woodland.

In other games:

• Ryanne Paige had 10 points for No. 20 Stonington in a 58-46 loss to No. 13 Tolland in the Class M first round. Lia Vann added nine points for the Bears, who finished 12-11, while Ashley Wheeler scored eight points and had 10 rebounds. Kristen Schatzlein led Tolland with 25 points.

• Alayna Cassabria scored 14 points, but No. 26 Ledyard was eliminated by No. 7 Ellington, 50-34, in the Class M first round. Kylie Fustini added 11 points for the Colonels, who finished 9-13, while Kelly Conley led Ellington with 18 points.

• Samantha Rentz had 13 points for No. 30 Griswold in a 57-32 loss to No. 3 Windham in the Class M first round. Jenna Bromley added five points for Griswold, which finished 9-14. Ali Risley scored 23 for Windham.

H.S. swimming

• Henry Kietzman and Christian Berg each won two events as Fitch finished tied with East Lyme for the Eastern Connecticut Conference regular-season title with an 88-70 win over New London. Berg won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly for the Falcons (12-1, 11-1) while Kietzman won the 500 freestyle and was on the winning 200 medley relay team with Mike Lussier, Luke Watson and Zach Murrallo. Zach Peterson set a school record in winning the 100 backstroke (1:04.17) for New London (0-11, 0-11).

Women's basketball

• Coast Guard Academy senior Melissa Martinelli was named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball all-conference first team in voting by league coaches.

It was the third straight season she has been a first-team All-NEWMAC pick after being named NEWMAC Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 2007. This season Martinelli led the conference in scoring (19.4), rebounding (8.5) and free throw percentage (.747), while finishing fifth in field goal percentage (.481).

Martinelli finished her career as Coast Guard's all-time leading scorer (1,853 points) and rebounder (906).

Men's basketball

• Connecticut College senior Shavar Bernier was named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) all-conference second team. Bernier broke Conn's career record for 3-pointers (203) by making six in the Camels' final home game agains Bowdoin on Feb. 13 and finished with 1,1878 career points.

• Coast Guard was presented the annual NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award, an award voted on by student-athletes from each of the seven conference teams.

The award goes to the team in each sport that most closely demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct. Coast Guard also won the inaugural Sportsmanship Award in 2007.

Men's swimming

• Conn College placed sixth in the NESCAC championships last weekend at Williams and senior Pat Troy was awarded the Four-Year High Point Swimmer award for the Camels.

Troy placed second in the 50- and 100-yard butterfly events with respective times of 22.78 and 49.81 seconds, earnining All-NESCAC honors in both events and earning a provisional qualifying spot for the NCAA Division III championships in the 100 fly.

In addition, sophomore Tim Walsh earned All-NESCAC honors with second-place finishes in the 50, 100 and 200-yard backstroke events. He also is a provisional qualifier for the nationals in the 100 and 200 back. Also, the 200 freestyle relay team of Troy, Walsh, Brian Finnerty and Grant Moryan was second in 1:23.35, also provisionally qualifying for the NCAA meet.
