Toyota says it will spend $250 million on bonuses to assist employees at a factory in California that is slated to be closed.
Toyota Motor Corp., working to repair its image in the U.S. following recalls and congressional hearings, says the bonuses are for salaried and hourly workers at New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. The factory in Fremont, Calif., is scheduled to end production April 1.
The facility was a 50-50 joint venture between Toyota and General Motors, but GM pulled out last year and is liquidating its stake. Toyota announced later that it would close the plant, which employs 4,600.
