T-More advances to New England semis

Beverly, Mass. - Tre Bowman scored 27 points as fourth-seeded St. Thomas More defeated No. 5 South Kent, 87-83, in the quarterfinals of the New England Class A Prep School men's basketball tournament Wednesday night at Endicott College.

The Chancellors (26-7) will play top-seeded Brewster Academy in Friday's semifinals at 8 p.m. Brewster routed No. 8 Bridgton Academy, 94-59.

Bryon Allen added 18 points for T-More while Matt Conway added 13 points and seven rebounds.

Boys' swimming

• Matt Peluso won the 200-yard freestyle, David Hughes won the 50 freestyle, and both swam on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams as Ledyard/Stonington beat New London, 107.5-59.5, in the Eastern Connecticut Conference. Jeremy Oswald won the 100 breaststroke and swam on the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams for Ledyard/Stonington (2-11, 2-10).

Zach Peterson won the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle for the Whalers (0-12, 0-1) and Lorenzo Morales won the 100 butterfly.

College tennis

• Chris O'Brien has been named the interim men's and women's at Connecticut College. O'Brien spent the previous six seasons as the coach at Roger Williams University, where he led the women's team to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances in 2007 and 2008, and led the men's team to the second round of the national tournament last year. O'Brien replaces Paul Huch, who resigned earlier this year.

Anderson, Seifer honored

• Coast Guard's junior guard Jessica Anderson and sophomore guard Rebekah Seifer were both named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's basketball academic all-conference team.

Local football

• Four players with local ties helped a team from Connecticut team advance to the national championships of the Badger Sports/New Level National 7 on 7 Eastern Regional passing tournament held last weekend at Rutgers.

New London's Garrick McQueen and Stephan Dance, Montville's Skylar McNair and former New London quarterback Casey Cochran helped Connecticut go 7-1, losing in the title game to Maryland 3, 34-21. Connecticut went 4-0 in pool play with wins over Rhode Island (31-7), Pennsylvania (26-7), Maine (40-18) and Delaware (36-0). They beat Vermont (32-6) in the first elimination round, beat New Jersey 2 (26-8) in the quarters and Maryland 2 (26-21) in the semis.

Cochran, who now attends Masuk of Monroe, completed 215 of 259 passes for 37 touchdowns and McQueen had 28 catches for four TDs. Defensively, McQueen was credited with nine pass breakups and two interceptions, Dance had 11 breakups and one interception and McNair had five breakups and one interception.

The national tournament will be held the July 4th weekend at the University of Alabama.
