After reading the article titled "Officials hope drug and alcohol survey results enough to bring out parents," published March 3, all I could think was, how could a town truly believe that one session of survey results could help put an end to young students' drinking and drug abuse?
It is silly to believe that a public forum will help curb this issue. Middle school and high school students will have no desire to attend a lecture on the commonality of their illicit habits.
This is an issue that needs to be discussed privately, within the confinements of the family homes. Parents need to take charge of their children's misbehavior rather than allowing the public to take care of it for them.
Furthermore, a letter signed by various town officials states that, "Residents who don't have children are also urged to attend; as the responsibility for protecting our youth belongs to us all." Those residents who do not have children should not have to concern themselves with these private issues.
Town officials should realize that one public gathering will not fix a long-term personal problem, especially when it is dealing with the severity of young substance abuse.
